Sales - Evil or No?

Journal Entry: Tue Jun 30, 2009, 10:07 AM
Expiration Date:

Not a Pitchperson

To this day I swear up & down I will never be a sales person—I just can’t do it because I don’t have the mentality to be “that guy/gal” who pushes people into buying. Now don’t confuse this with I’m a non-convincing person. In fact, I get told over & over that I should be in sales because I’m a passionate person who is approachable and upbeat not to mention convincing but I can NOT for the life of me push someone if they say “No”. It’s not in my nature to do so because I can’t stand it when someone is pushy with me. It’s also the mentality. I’m ranting today because I got to listen in on a sales training session today & cringed at most of what I heard. Things like: “Make the client look stupid” or “Don’t LET them say ‘No’” or “I know I’m an ass but I make money.” Granted… This was all cocky bullshit and these people kiss ass when a client walks in the door but I’ve NEVER heard of making someone look or feel stupid. Why on Earth would you want to give someone your money if you feel demeaned by them?

Sales Warped

I’ve worked retail—in fact that put me through college by selling clothes to women. I was good at it but at times I felt horrible in my job especially when trying to get people to apply for credit cards. I didn’t enjoy that part of the retail job & I didn’t really enforce it all that much when I was employed, I got many warnings about it but I made up for it in sales numbers. I loved retail because it was like shopping for other people—which was actually really fun for me. But it also warped my sense of honesty. I found I was lying in order to make the sale bigger so my stats would go up or I would get stepped all over by snotty clients—one lady actually dumped her jacket on TOP of me like I was a clothes wrack—which in turn made me very bitter towards the majority of clients. This is why I got OUT of retail & all sales, it was making me mean & I love people too much to become a meanie.

There IS a Difference

There is a difference for many people, some can work in sales & are honest good people but others are snots who think they shit gold. This is in ANY profession really but I see it a lot here in the sales department. Those who are good folks making a good living selling believe in their product, are honest, upfront, & LISTEN to their clients. Those who are the latter just like the sound of their own voice—there are MORE are these in this office I’m afraid.

  • Mood: Zeal
  • Listening to: Chitter chatter
  • Eating: nothing right now
  • Drinking: Juice & H2O from now on

I believe if you got to do something. It should be for the love of it. That job is kinda too pushy for a person like me and I would get angry to if someone did that to me. It isn't like they can't recognize other humans.

Heh, I know what you mean, I believe in honesty myself, I often find myself thinking things like, do one really need things like "that", Should I try to "sell" my artwork and stuff like that, at least, when I`m happy as long as I have my health and enough money for my needs, but meh, many people think that they need more money and that they have to milk everything for whats it worth, but the question is in the end.

Is it really worth it?

Do what you feel is the right thing to do

I think when it comes to selling your art you'll be so passionate about it it'll happen naturally. But say sales for like "paper" or "light sockets" or something like that. It's something you're not really wanting to sell but you have to so to speak. & then you get these sales guys who are absolute ass holes here & they think they're God... It's annoying.

Btw, I'm not in sales I'm working front desk so I get all the BS these guys throw around

I hate it when someone doesn't accept my "No" & they keep pushing me--or worse try to make me feel stupid or wrong for not agreeing with them.
It's just plain RUDE if you ask me. Whatever happened to manners?

I have been working sales since I was 16 years old. And the one thing I have learned to become the best salesman ever, is to simply LISTEN. The best salesmen are listeners. They know what the customer wants and needs. After you provide that for them, then you can offer them other things that will supplement what they are already getting. I never ever assume they are stupid either... That is unless they just are. But normally, most know when you are trying to run a game on them. Do that, as well as getting to know the person you are dealing with will not only make your job more enjoyable as a salesperson, but they will keep coming back to you. And your job wont seem pushy, cause they are coming back to you.

And just like drugs, and physical abuse, it's the same in the sales world... NO MEANS NO!

I could hug you! See! I know there are good sales people out there--it's not that hard to listen. *bashes head on desk*
I think it's THIS office really, they are bullshitters & cock-asses & the whole "Make them look/feel stupid" is actually WHAT THEY SAID, I still can't believe my ears about that one. & this guy is always using the wrong analagies (spell?) like forgive me for saying this, rape as an example of memory recall!!! He really sets my teeth on edge when he talks b/c he's SO damned full of himself--so sure he is God.
Personal Quote: "I have 26 FAMILIES to feed when I make my sales. Not employees FAMILIES so I have to sell more than anyone else."

So you have two options... take your talent elsewhere, or become the BEST salesman in that entire office doing it the way YOU know is right. It's obvious that this clown you work for is just that. A clown. You should ask him how many repeat customers he has, or how big his personal clientele is... And if he claims he has one, make him name them all and give small details about a few of them. At that point you will make HIM look like the idiot he really is. The start blowing up in the sales arena. And help other people around you too. Don't make it a competition. You do that, you are actually taking the job away from other people. Especially if it happens to be commission based sales. I found that after a while, when I had a nice regular clientele, I would start bringing new customers to my other work partners. They will appreciate this. Will bring everyone closer, and more folks on your side. (Not that having people on your side matters, but it helps when the mutiny begins.)

Yeah I guess you're right. If I call someone "rude" it is an insult from me even though some people laugh @ the word.
